Responsible and Sustainable Ecotourism

For those to whom being a responsible tourist and a supporter of sustainable development is important, rest assured that by patronizing Coyote Canyon you are not only contribution to the promotion of ecotourism but are also encouraging economic growth for generations of local ranching families. Coyote Canyon Adventures aims to provide responsible and sustainable ecotourism for the conscious traveler.  Responsible tourism and sustainable tourism have an identical goal, that of sustainable development. The pillars of responsible tourism are therefore the same as those of sustainable tourism – environmental integrity, social justice and maximizing local economic benefit.

Responsible Tourism can be defined as tourism which:

• "minimizes negative economic, environmental and social impacts,
• generates greater economic benefits for local people and enhances the well being of host communities
• involves local people in decisions that affect their lives and life chances,
• makes positive contributions to the conservation of natural and cultural heritage embracing diversity,
• provides more enjoyable experiences for tourists through more meaningful connections with local people, and a greater understanding of local cultural, social and environmental issues
• is culturally sensitive, encourages respect between tourists and hosts, and builds local pride and confidence”

Community-based management
Coyote Canyon is a partnership of two local Mexican families, one whose ancestors worked the very same land, with the help and support and consent of community leaders from the Canada de la Virgen area. We provide jobs and opportunities for ranching families with no higher education who without tourism would barely be living beyond the poverty level.  Though these families value their traditions and simple lifestyle, Coyote Canyon Adventures affords them a way to enhance their lives economically and subsequently the quality of life for much of the small and close-knit community. Our aim is to introduce tourists to the beauty of the Mexican countryside while preserving it for the families whose livelihoods depend on the ability to raise cattle and farm.

Sustainable tourism is based on the premise that the people living next to a resource are the ones best suited to protecting it because they are directly or indirectly dependent on the location for their livelihoods. The owners and operators of Coyote Canyon are involved in the community and a percentage of each horseback excursion is donated to the town council to apply to community projects.

The involvement of locals allows an alternative sustainable form of development for communities and their environments that are typically unable to support other forms of development. We support the integrity of local cultures by favoring businesses which conserve cultural heritage and traditional values and by purchasing local goods and participating with small, local businesses in San Miguel de Allende.
