Community-based management
Coyote Canyon is a partnership of two local Mexican families, one whose ancestors worked the very same land, with the help and support and consent of community leaders from the Canada de la Virgen area. We provide jobs and opportunities for ranching families with no higher education who without tourism would barely be living beyond the poverty level. Though these families value their traditions and simple lifestyle, Coyote Canyon Adventures affords them a way to enhance their lives economically and subsequently the quality of life for much of the small and close-knit community. Our aim is to introduce tourists to the beauty of the Mexican countryside while preserving it for the families whose livelihoods depend on the ability to raise cattle and farm.
Sustainable tourism is based on the premise that the people living next to a resource are the ones best suited to protecting it because they are directly or indirectly dependent on the location for their livelihoods. The owners and operators of Coyote Canyon are involved in the community and a percentage of each horseback excursion is donated to the town council to apply to community projects.
The involvement of locals allows an alternative sustainable form of development for communities and their environments that are typically unable to support other forms of development. We support the integrity of local cultures by favoring businesses which conserve cultural heritage and traditional values and by purchasing local goods and participating with small, local businesses in San Miguel de Allende.
